Leaflets asking pupils for their views will be sent to schools and colleges as part of the Assembly government’s consultation on its far-reaching Welsh-medium education proposals.

The strategy, contained in a 120-page document launched last month, includes plans to increase the number of Welsh-medium schools and Welsh- speaking teachers.

Jane Hutt, the education minister, said getting youngsters’ views was essential if the strategy were to succeed. The leaflet asks them if they have any ideas for books, CDs, DVDs or games that could be developed to help them enjoy learning the language more.

It also asks whether they want more lessons taught in Welsh, and, if so, in which subjects. One key proposal is to improve bilingual fluency in English-medium schools by having some subjects taught entirely in Welsh.

The leaflet also asks pupils whether they want more after-school clubs and activities in Welsh, and whether they want to continue learning the language after the age of 16.

The government is particularly keen to improve Welsh provision in the post-16 sector, where opportunities to learn the language are limited, especially in Anglicised areas.

Pupils will also be asked how their parents or carers can be encouraged to learn Welsh.

Ms Hutt said: “I want to hear suggestions on what we can do to make learning Welsh more exciting and enjoyable, how we can make the Welsh language more accessible for everyone and how we can continue to develop and strengthen the language across the board.”
