While I find Matthew Handy’s results and, indeed, “poise and enthusiasm” as an unqualified tutor commendable (“The damage is done”, Letters, 15 March), I find it unusual to say the least that in 20 years of teaching hundreds of students, he has apparently made no effort to obtain any qualifications. The fact that there are probably many unqualified drivers on the road who are good drivers does not mean that they don’t need a driving licence.

The reason for proper training, accreditation and qualifications is so that we can be sure that a minimum level is achieved. I also started my career as a tutor, progressing to lecturer and eventually qualified teacher because I’m passionate about giving my very best for my students. I believe in lifelong learning. Continuing professional development is an integral component of teaching. Man up, Mr Handy. Why no evidence of CPD?
