The shadow of deportation has lifted for Yannick Malela, after a campaign by his former school in north London saved him and his family from being sent back to the Congo.
Teachers, classmates and parents at Acland Burghley comprehensive were shocked when Yannick, then 15, was told he and his family must leave, despite having been in the UK for nearly seven years. They rallied round, wrote to their MPs and helped the family get a lawyer. Now the family have won permanent leave to stay.
More and more schools and colleges are becoming involved in trying to protect refugee pupils threatened with deportation. News, 5
