The Royal Society of Chemistry has called on the Government to halt the “catastrophic slippage” in school science standards. It said that official figures showing year-on-year rises in GCSE science grades were misleading. Pupils could get a good pass by showing superficial knowledge of scientific issues, the society said. It has launched a Downing Street e-petition calling for urgent action. A department spokesman denied standards had fallen.
