MY research into effective teaching and appraisal that began with my MEd 10 years ago also indicates the best teachers don’t know how to talk about what makes them so good.

It appears that, as with great artists, musicians, sportsmen etc, great teachers do not necessarily have the skills that allow them to dissect their abilities.

I agree that these findings have implications for the Government’s aim of identifying and disseminating good practice as so far appraisal has not considered that the appraiser may be a “poor analyst”.
