The important work by Dr Ellie Dommett, which links music to cognitive thought, must not be undervalued (“Music hits all the right notes”, TESpro, 25 November). Her research confirms the positive impact music education has on language, intelligence and decision-making abilities and goes on to suggest that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

What is clear from the Government’s national plan for music education is that heads, governors, teachers and perhaps even the national curriculum review team all have a responsibility to see that music plays a central role in every school curriculum.

Music supports children in their work across all the subjects on the curriculum. Undermining musical opportunities risks damaging teaching and learning in all schools.
