* Training for Higher Still is causing problems to schools. Ken Cunningham, headteacher of Hillhead High in Glasgow, said he had 16 teachers out of the classroom for two weeks’ training.

Tony Gavin of St Margaret’s Academy, Livingston, said that preparation for Higher Still had to be arranged without undermining work in schools. He could not find sufficient supply teachers.

“There is frustration that although funding exists for supply cover, we can’t use the funding efficiently to ensure continuity of teaching.” But Mr Gavin accepted that there had to be some adverse element to any major change.
