While most readers were on the beaches and camp-sites, late-night box watchers were enjoying a revealing discussion about belief and conviction between rising television star (and TES Scotland contributor) the Rev Ewan Aitken and one Roy Jobson, correctly billed as director of education in Edinburgh.

Jobson told of his Salvationist past and conversion to the Episcopalian Church. What the In Confidence programme failed to mention was, of course, that Aitken doubles as education spokesman for the capital - Jobson’s political boss, in other words.
