KENYA: The government has banned boarding school visiting days, caning as a form of punishment and inter-school mock examinations in a bid to stamp out unrest in schools. It has also introduced a quota system in state secondary schools - a move that will allow them to admit only 15 per cent of their students from private primary schools. The rest will come from government-supported primary schools. Education minister Henry Kosgey said the government has also prohibited weekend and holiday tuition in all secondary and primary schools in the country. “Motivation” fees paid by parents to teachers who undertake extra coaching are also going.
