Furzefield, on a large housing estate in Merstham, near Redhill, received the award for its all-round achievement and consistent improvement. It was also in recognition of the strong links it has developed with the local community, involving pupils from three nearby special schools. It has thrown open its ICT facilities to teach adults basic computer skills.
Furzefield received a glowing report when the inspectors visited in April. Pupil numbers have risen from 263 to 388 since 1997.
Bob Twells, the headteacher, says:“The culture of the school is one of improvement, not just of the children, but us as a group of teachers. Visitors always comment on how polite, open, friendly and thoughtful the children are and, for me, there is no better commendation.”
