101 of the Best , the TES’s definitive children’s books guide, comes free with this week’s paper. The recommendations, intended to embrace the most outstanding new books of the year and the best new editions of classics, include poetry, fiction and non-fiction titles, from pre-schoolers’ board books to teenage fiction.Many have been praised by TES reviewers during the past year. Where appropriate, the original review date has been given. Others will be reviewed in later issues - The TES continues to feature good children’s books every week.

The 101 books were published either in 1997 or late 1996, with reviews appearing in 1997. The 16-page guide also includes reviewers’ choices of the top audio and video tapes,a guide to festival days around the world, and a free books offer.
