Bad teachers are responsible for bad discipline, argued Glasgow teacher Alan MacRae in a front page article in The TES Scotland of March 1, 1974: Almost every comprehensive has at least one and often three or four really incompetent teachers. These teachers not only have problems with their own classroom discipline, they also create trouble for every other member of staff in the school, not least the guidance and administration staff . . .

It is no surprise, therefore, that many headmasters would prefer to be rid of one teacher than three or four of the school’s most disruptive pupils.
