Academies fail to sponsor the weak

Only 37 out of more than 1,200 schools in England that have taken on academy status since the election have acted on the coalition’s request that they should sponsor a weaker school. The Department for Education maintained that every academy supported a weaker school “in some way”, but the ATL union said the “biggest weakness” in the academies programme was that they were under no obligation to do so.
