More than 30 headteachers and governors from high-performing schools have written a letter in support of Conservative proposals to allow them to become academies. The heads said they believed large numbers of state schools would apply for the status. But Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, which is against the proposals, said: “There are approximately 23,000 schools. Thirty hardly represents a groundswell of opinion.”
