Lord Adonis may have a “towering intelligence” (TES, May 27) but knows little about statistics, as shown by his statement that 20 per cent of children still go through primary school without being able to “read or write properly”.
When the national curriculum was developed, level 4 was that of the average child. If we accept that this average has improved slightly, the fact that “only” 20 per cent of children are below that average is a remarkable achievement by this Government.
