As Mike Kent wryly observed ("Hit and miss is par for the course", May 14), there has been a tendency in education to replace a simple word with a confusing acronym. Thus, "training" morphed into "CPD" (continuing professional development).
My favourite CPD was a day on Accelerated Something. We were told children needed lots of space, dehydration was a real problem and they should be urged to ask lots of questions. So there we were, hundreds of teachers crammed in a stuffy hotel room, lectured to for hours with never a chance to ask a single question.
