Members of the University and College Union (UCU) at City College Birmingham and Wolverhampton College have voted to strike on June 21 over job losses. Members at Birmingham Metropolitan College have voted to take action short of a strike. The UCU said 78 jobs were at risk at City College Birmingham and 160 positions were under threat at City College Wolverhampton, with some 100 posts in jeopardy at Birmingham Metropolitan College. The union’s West Midlands regional official Nick Varney said: “We are not blind to the troubles facing the FE sector and realise that there will have to be difficult decisions made. What we do not, and will not, accept is colleges using funding cuts to unnecessarily sack staff or hold a gun to the heads of staff who fear for their livelihoods.”
