MORE could be done to reduce the number of car journeys to school, which account for 20 per cent of rush-hour traffic, says the Government. Education minister Charles Clarke said LEAs should negotiate with bus and train firms for cheaper fares for schoolchildren. He said they could also support walking and cycling by developing safer routes.
