Active life isn’t cheap

Lack of funds is continuing to undermine the active school programme in secondaries, a recent evaluation for Sportscotland found.

As teenage girls reveal (above), most of the focus has switched to younger age groups. Researchers warned last year: “A weak secondary level programme will not only fail older pupils, but could also negate what has been achieved through the primary programme.”

Local authority managers of the programme want more money and people to deliver activities in secondaries. Co-ordinators in schools need more time, they maintain.
