The Government is considering introducing mandatory training for all school special educational needs co-ordinators as part of its response, due next month, to the critical report on special needs provision by MPs on the Commons’ education select committee.

Lord Adonis, the schools minister, revealed his thinking at a fringe meeting organised by autism charity the Treehouse Trust after a parent told how a head, who was also the Senco at their children’s primary school, had failed to understand the difference between Asperger’s and Tourette’s syndromes.
