PATCHY provision of adult education will not be tolerated under the new funding regime, local authorities have been warned.

Adult skills minister Ivan Lewis said there is no plan to take adult and community education away from LEAs but hinted they will have to prove their worth once guaranteed funding is scrapped on July 7 next year. The learning and skills councils will then take over responsibility for adult and community education.

Speaking at a conference organised by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education on Tuesday, he said: “I want LEAs to enhance their role in developing local, high-quality provision.

“However, we have to ensure that coverage is not patchy. The test is the added value LEAs can bring to this area of learning.”
