Half of all children born in Africa carry the HIV virus, Dr Peter Piot, executive Director of the United Nations Aids Agency has warned. He said that the disease has cut life expectancy on the continent by 25 years.

“The international community is not reacting as it should. As long as fighting Aids is seen as business as usual we shall fail,” he said.

The Zimbabwe government estimates that almost 15 million children under 15 have lost their mothers to Aids.
