A VOLUNTARY code against ageism is now widely operated by major companies in the UK, and the Government has recently emphasised its determination to suppress this pernicious form of discrimination in a number of pronouncements.

I therefore find it deplorable that The TES is still willing to permit advertisements like those from Bedford School (TES, May 12) for a head of department: “the appointmentwould suit a young ... teacher. Younger teachers will be considered for the non-head of department position” and still more deplorable that the headmaster of a leading independent school is quite happy to set such a reprehensible example.

In the US and Australia he, and you, would now be facing legal action.
