Alan's books for the beach

The holiday books chosen this year by some prominent figures in education: Alan Johnson is reading Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy. He is also reading Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown, with his son.

Jim Knight, schools minister, has already read Never Let me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and Brixton Rock by Alex Wheatle and is currently reading The Bonesetters Daughters by Amy Tan.

Andrew Adonis, schools minister, is reading Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona.

Martin Ward, deputy general secretary of the Association of College and School Leaders, read The American by Henry James which he said was "disappointing".

Stuart Herdson, incoming president of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, is reading Every Second Counts by Lance Armstrong, and has just finished Dreaming the Eagle by Manda Scott - part of a trilogy about Boudicca, and has not decided on the next book.
