TALKING of television, hats off to EastEnders for its entirely unsolicited plug for this organ on Monday (Terry the newsagent credited Maureen’s expert know-ledge of the pressures on today’s kids with reading The TES).

But the Diary’s eye was also caught the night before by a glamorous young lady in an eye-catching blue dress seated nex to Lord Puttnam at the BAFTAs awards ceremony. ‘Twas Estelle Morris, taking a break from the duties of state to mix with the glitterati (and presumably cheer when Ali G failed to win a prize).

All good research for the next teaching oscars ceremony, and now we know why the Government was so keen to get Lord Puttnam on board.
