In reaction to the common practice of pencil and paper testing in key stage 34 maths classes, a group of Suffolk teachers led by Peter Critchely, an advisory teacher at Suffolk Council, have written a booklet entitled Tired of tests? Some alternative strategies for learning through assessment in mathematics. It is available to Suffolk schools for Pounds 5 and to non-Suffolk organisations for Pounds 10 from: Miss B Kopczak, Inspection and Advice Division, St Andrew House, County Hall, Ipswich, Suffolk IP4 1LJ, tel. 01473 264692.

Maths Games - Number Key Stage One and Key Stage Two, written by Joe Santaniello, a former primary head, are designed to make maths fun and encourage children to apply mathematical skills and understanding to solve mathematical problems. Each title contains two full-colour game boards, pages of photocopiable resources and teachers’ notes. Pounds 12.99 from: Scholastic Publications, Villiers House, Clarendon Avenue, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire CV32 5PR, tel. 01926 887799.
