RADICAL plans to introduce a new breed of joint faith and community schools are being considered by Knowsley council on Merseyside. Independent experts say the only way to tackle falling pupil numbers is to amalgamate community primary schools with their Roman Catholic or Church of England neighbours.

The proposals could mean schools running separate assemblies and RE for different groups of children.
