IT IS surprising to find your leader article so uncritically enthusiastic of the American ambassador’s motives in launching an essay competition about the Second World War links between the US and Britain (TES, April 7).

The business of the US Embassy is, first and foremost, pblic relations, not the promotion of education for British youngsters. I hope that history teachers will encourage pupils who enter to take an objective, balanced and critical approach.
