(Photograph) - Amina Al-Yassin, a 16-year-old from Brent, north London, arrived in Britain 13 years ago from the Lebanon unable to speak English but is predicted nine A-stars in her GCSEs this summer. Now she is the winner of the Edexcel exam board’s student of the year award. Steven Hastings, who writes for TES Friday magazine, was one of two runners-up for the Edexcel education journalist of the year award. Judges said his articles in ‘The Issue’

series - on subjects as diverse as media relations and teacher housing - came a ‘close second’ alongside BBC journalist and TES columnist Mike Baker. The award was won by freelance journalist Wendy Berliner. Photograph by ANNA GORDON
