Last spring’s cornucopia of revision materials for GCSE exams in modern languages was not the end of the story. A whole new batch of revision aids is upon us and very useful they are, too.

The most appealing feature is their user-friendly, photo- copiable, loose-leaf format. Every teacher likes to have a set of easy access materials for exam practice apart from the regular class text.

All these publications offer advice on exam technique by meticulously explaining just what is required at every stage. A good case in point is the Collins Success at Grade A in French, which covers all the language skills in the major topic areas and has a gem of an encouraging exam tip on every page.

The emphasis on accurate writing and knowledge of grammar in the John Murray German Writing Skills and Spanish Grammar Skills and the Collins Practice in Spanish Grammar at 14+ reinforce the need to practise grammatical accuracy.

Developing Pronunciation Skills in French for 11 to 16-year-olds is an important resource for departments, because, despite our efforts at target language use, there are still some strange notions of French pronunciation among pupils.

A simple session once a week from this helpful book from Year 7 might set pupils on the right track.

Similarly, French Speaking Skills, with its accompanying cassette, concentrates exclusively on the speaking skill and practises all aspects of foundation and higher tier entries effectively.

Mary O’Sullivan is senior lecturer in Spanish at the University of Hertfordshire
