Ultracrepideraniasm. It was with a sense of schadenfreude that Jotter observed the silence from an audience of distinguished educational researchers when Professor John Gardner of Queen’s University, Belfast, asked an ethics seminar at Jordanhill if any of them knew what that U word meant.
It is, of course, the practice of commenting beyond the sphere of one’s competence - something that no ethical researcher would ever dream of doing or, newspaper editor for that matter.
