IRELAND: One-day rolling strikes began this week in Dublin with more expected around the country next week in support of a 30 per cent pay rise.
Meanwhile, the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland is threatening not to supervise or mark junior and leaving certificate exams (taken at 15 and 17), as part of its pay campaign. Last term, teacher went on strike for three days and worked-to-rule on six other days, refusing to cover for absent colleagues, which caused the widespread cancellation of classes.
Talks collapsed last month when ministers docked pay for three of the work-to-rule days. More than two-thirds of secondary teachers in church-linked schools are in the union.
