The head of a national charity has been appointed as the next children’s commissioner for England.

Anne Longfield will take up the post next year, succeeding Maggie Atkinson as the third commissioner since the role was created in 2004 to promote the rights of children.

Ms Longfield is chief executive of 4Children, a national charity working to support children, young people and families. She was awarded the OBE for her contribution to children’s services and has also worked in the Prime Minister’s strategy unit.

Education Secretary Nicky Morgan, who announced the appointment today, said Ms Longfield had shown a dedication to improving the lives of children over a 30-year career.

“I have absolutely no doubt that her strong track record in children and young people’s services and the passion she has demonstrated throughout her career will make a real difference to the lives of children across the country,” Ms Morgan said.

Ms Longfield said she was privileged to have been appointed to the post. “It’s a vitally important role with the potential to make a real difference for children in this country - especially for those vulnerable children who need our protection and support the most,” she said. Ms Longfield will take up the five-year post in March.
