THE digital network represents the “next logical development” of the National Grid for Learning, the Executive states in its response to the PricewaterhouseCoopers report on broadband and schools.

It is expected Learning and Teaching Scotland would manage the educational content and services on the network, providing the “national hub”.

The Executive says: “When looking at the creation of a national schools intranet we will be considering both the provision of connections and the provision of services over those connections.

“While the services will on the whole be specific to schools, questions of connectivity will be considered in the context of the wider needs of the Executive and the public sector.”

It acknowledges that some authorities, such as Glasgow and Edinburgh, already have medium to long-term contracts with different companies and will need to dovetail with the developing national network.
