Second-year pupils at St Joseph’s College in Dumfries were all fired up for their most excellent study support focus day the other week.

The initiative involved a “sleuthing” theme, with pupils eager to track down a solution to a cunning riddle during the action-packed day. One mystery yet to be fully explained was the non-appearance of the star guest.

A late fax confirmed the absence of Scotland’s number two goalie. Pupils had even been advised to watch out for the green nd white helicopter landing on the lawn. So no prizes for guessing the team.

The best laid scheme was unfortunately undone by the Inverness Caley backlash. Jonathan Gould, who watched three fly past him, was unable, after all, to fly down to Dumfries. He missed a valuable session, too, on “How did Jonathan Gould learn?”

The hard Kenny Dalglish way, perhaps? Gould is leaving Celtic for pastures new. You never know, he might pop by St Joe’s on his way down south.
