The envy. The desperation. The crushing knowledge that you’re yet another year closer to death...

Ah, there’s nothing like a New Year’s celebration, UK-style. But if you’re not planning on spending this year weeping in front of Jool’s Holland’s Hootenanny while your relatives ring to check you’re still breathing, there’s still time to make plans.

Londoners know to avoid Trafalgar Square like the plague, but why not try the Super Furry Animals or Silent Disco’s unique headphone-driven club night at the South Bank Centre for pound;50 and pound;30 respectively.

Braver souls can venture to School Disco at The Forum in Kentish Town or attend a late-night do at the Comedy Store.

St Ives and Newquay in Cornwall hold lively New Year’s Eve celebrations, with al fresco fancy dress a must.

And as always, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay party kicks London’s firmly into a cocked Tam O’Shanter. If you’re feeling classy why not check out one of the city’s Hogmanay balls. The swishest takes place at the Balmoral Hotel.

Finally, Cardiff lays on free fireworks in Bute Park, followed by an evening of outdoor music.
