A liberal education is needed now more than ever to counter the “political ignorance” that allows American voters to be “dulled and cowed” into supporting war with Iraq, according to Lalage Bown, former professor of adult and continuing education at Glasgow University. Speaking at a celebratory conference in Edinburgh to mark the centenary of the Workers’

Educational Association, Professor Bown said a liberal education provided people with the power of critical analysis.

Fraser Patrick, director of neighbourhood resources with Dundee City Council, called for the expansion of community learning to promote “active citizenship”.
