England’s headteachers are to be given increased powers to discipline pupils who misbehave, in or out of school. Michael Gove, the Westminster Education Secretary, made the pledge at the Conservative party conference in Birmingham last week. He also announced tougher standards for science and maths exams, and the appointment of historian Simon Schama to advise on the teaching of history.
