Should we be over the moon or sick as parrots about the news that schools must lay on girls’ football teams if there is a demand? It’s great news for all those girls who can bend it like Beckham - or have a good time trying. But it’s a bit depressing that all the gender traffic seems to be one way. Where are all the boys clamouring to play netball, or lacrosse? Why is male culture apparently more acceptable than female?
But maybe the new rules could help lift the pall of gloom traditional in Britain during Wimbledon fortnight, as our plucky home-grown tennis hopes implode one by one. A bit of creative gender-bending, and our men’s netball and women’s rugby teams could be the (unrivalled?) envy of the world. Just in time for the London Olympics, perhaps?
