Your article reporting that FE colleges are being blamed for flooding the market with young people with inappropriate skills raises key issues for our sector and the country (“FE blamed as jobs market faces floods and droughts”, 29 June). If you evolve a skills strategy in the absence of an industrial strategy you face big problems, as illustrated in the article. At Dearne Valley College in South Yorkshire, we are putting an employment and skills board at the heart of the college that sucks in high-quality labour-market intelligence and informs curriculum development. In short: appropriate skills for current and anticipated jobs.
