The Scottish Archives for Schools project, which encourages the use of primary sources, has produced not only three books that were highly commended by the Saltire Society award judges (see page 7) but also two further booklets for P6-S2. Scotland 1901-1938 and World War II: The Scottish Home Front now join Scotland in the 16th Century, The Jacobites and Victorian Scotland, and there is a CD-Rom covering all five, with digital sound recordings.

The SAfS project is led by the National Archives of Scotland in partnership with the Scottish Executive Education Department and Learning and Teaching Scotland. Each booklet contains specially interpreted original sources, historical background, pupil activities, teachers’ notes and assessment opportunities.

The NAS education website has a link to an SAfS micro-site and to a variety of historical records (1830-1930) from participating archives in the Scottish Archive Network (SCAN).

The website also provides material on James VI and the Union of the Crowns, including primary sources of evidence with teachers’ notes and online and printable activities to find out about the royal family tree, the design of the Great Seal, court fashion and the Scottish landscape during the early 17th century.
