Are teachers poor?

Pliny the younger: They are paid much better than when I entered the profession and some salaries, especially for core subject heads, are close to the Pounds 50K mark.

Manwiththegingerhair: Teachers are middle-class. Unless you have a lot of dependents middle-class people aren’t poor.

Jack55: Teachers are poorly paid compared to most other graduate professions. Roughly speaking inside five years peers who take City jobs will be a third to a half better paid at least. What other profession expects its new staff to be thankful for social housing?

WD: This old chestnut is often trotted out. But only a small proportion of graduates go in to the City and, of those, not all succeed. For average graduates, of which there are thousands, teaching offers the best pay they are ever likely to earn.
