Are we just walk-on parts in the big picture?

On Saturday evening I took a break from my planning and went to the cinema. One of the adverts began by celebrating the exciting varied and memorable career of Sir David Attenborough. In the very last part I realised that it was actually a Teacher Training Agency ad, aimed at encouraging young people into teaching. Somewhere in Sir David’s past there had been a teacher who had helped him on his way and “no one forgets a good teacher”.

I wondered what young people considering career options might make of all this. The message seemed clear: choose a glittering career, or become a teacher and look forward in your retirement, or later, to the chance of a compliment for contributing toward someone else’s.
