There are essentially three types of classroom, according to Ian Smith, of Learning Unlimited:

1 THE SAFE CLASSROOM:

* The teacher is authoritative and directs the learning;

* The students learn because they feel they ought to or should;

* The students learn because they respect the teacher, and they believe he or she cares about their progress and provides them with effective support.

2 THE SHARING CLASSROOM:

* The teacher is both trusting and encouraging;

* Students learn because it is important to their sense of self and goals;

* Students learn because they admire the teacher and are involved in activities that interest and engage them.

3 THE SELF-MOTIVATING CLASSROOM:

* The teacher is empowering;

* Students learn because they want to for themselves;

* Students learn because they feel the teacher helps them to bring out the best in themselves.
