It was no surprise that the Catholic Education Service for England and Wales opposed the call for elimination of transport privileges for faith schools in your article “Bus travel subsidy is road to perdition” (November 12).

However, its director sought to dismiss the call on the grounds that she interpreted the European Convention on Human Rights to say that “children should be educated in line with their parents’ wishes”.

But, as human rights organisation Liberty’s website confirms, Protocol 1 to Article 2 does “not impose on States an obligation to establish at their own expense, or to subsidise, education of any particular type” - and by extension, associated transport.
