A sage piece of advice was given to final-year students at Moray House last week by the sage of Balwearie High in Kirkcaldy, Gordon Mackenzie. Never overreact if a pupil comes in late, the heidie advised, since it simply escalates the problem.

His example made the point.

“Why are you late?”

“I was at the office.”

“Why were you at the office?”

“Because I was late.”

“Why were you late?”

“Because I slept in.”

“Why did you sleep in?”

“Because my mam slept in.”

“Why did your mam sleep in?”

And so it goes
