Assistance costs

WE appreciate that many teaching assistants may be both willing and able to release teachers for their PPA (Planning, Preparation and Assessment) time.

However, as classroom teachers belonging to the National Union of Teachers, we are not prepared to take PPA covered by assistants until their job descriptions have been defined in consultation with them, and their pay scale reflects these additional responsibilities and is commensurate with their chosen career structure.

The Government’s “vision” of 10 per cent non-contact time for teachers is a delusion unless it provides enough money for more pay for assistants, as well as enough money for sufficient assistants.
