* AN assistant principal of a further education college is to take on the leader of the Tories in Wales in the elections for the Welsh National Assembly on May 6.

Alun Pugh, from West Cheshire College, will contest the key seat of Clywd West for Labour. His task is to stop controversial Conservative leader Rod Richards winning back the constituency he lost in the 1997 Westminster election.

Mr Pugh, aged 43, has worked at four FE colleges over the past 15 years, including appointments at Bridgend and Llandrillo.
