An all-party alliance of peers has defeated the Government over its school reforms and backed a Conservative move which would allow councils to set up their own version of the Assisted Places Scheme.

An alliance of 114 Tory, Liberal Democrat and crossbench peers defeated Labour by one vote during the committee stage of the School Standards and Framework Bill.
