* In reply to Keith Atton’s letter regarding support staff (TES, May 20), would Mr Atton be happy if there were “associate surgeons” in the National Health Service? His grandchildren would then have operations performed by people who had spoken to the surgeon beforehand and carried out the operation. This would be much cheaper and could solve the problem of huge waiting lists.
